Untitled - Alister and Ratchet by sarahpicklesdill Untitled - Alister and Ratchet by sarahpicklesdill
This picture was something of a disappointment. Not the drawing itself, I'm pretty happy with how the linework turned out. I'm disappointed because I attempted to color this - and failed miserably. Which really stung because I used to be a colorist. People paid me to color things, and I was good at it. I don't know what happened, but I completely lost my coloring mojo.

It's most likely a combination of not having colored seriously for a while, and the fact that I'm teaching myself a new style is probably tripping me up too. It'll probably be a while until I give coloring another shot; I'll wait until I'm comfortable with how I draw first.

It may not be colored much, but somethings, these types of emotions are better expressed that way. Great work!

This is amazing. I'm glad I'm not the only one who focuses on their father/son relationship they have. (: The expression on Alister's face is amazing, and you're really good at drawing Lombaxes.

Dude, you're way better at coloring than me. D:

Really well done! I can't believe how well you drew their poses...

As for the coloring, don't worry about it. Firstly, I think it looks fine without color. Secondly, it's just a rusty skill! It'll come back to you! I would recommend practicing on some simpler things, pieces without so many... pieces!

Try drawing something simple in the room and coloring it, like an apple or a colored, glass bottle. :)

Daawwww, this is lovely! *is a sucker for cute moments between these two* Poor Ratchet.
And it looks nice without colour (although the little sample that's in your scraps looked good too!) But don't worry about it!

I love the gentle, worried, caring expression in Azimuth's face with the sad smile. I love how he's holding Ratchet and how big his hands are compared to Ratchet's lithe body (see how far his left hand goes around the younger's upper body). I love how Ratchet looks even smaller by this, so vulnerable while his face shows maybe hurt (is he biting his lip?), maybe tiredness. Maybe he was also knocked down so Alister is carrying him now. It's all open - and it's all so tender.

Ratchet looks also younger than in your first versions of him; his face is softer angled and rounder which fits him more since he's barely an adult (at least I assume he is). Nice detail on his drooping ears.

I wish you good luck for training your colouring, I love the feeling the monochrome is giving the picture. It is part of what makes the image "soft" - hard to put in words for me but it gives me a feeling of intimacy, as if they were in a dark room (where everything is colourless) and the darkness would "disconnect" them even when others should be close. Of course, the shading says something different (lighted from the front?) but the shadows makes it even softer. The shading is also superbe as it gives them mass, depth and form; a good example are the shadows around Ratchet's eyes.

i just love this to death ;_; you draw them so well~

ahh, i know what you mean by being depleted by a previous style. it's always good to practice--usually when i want to try something new i'll sketch out a random picture and then test my coloring on it.
you'll find yours--it'll come to you in time :) good luck on it!
